To split an area, drag its corner inward until a split preview appears. To join areas, drag one corner over another area —dragging further moves the area entirely, which is a new feature to Blender 4.4 and above. Hold Shift to open the area in a new window, or Ctrl to swap areas. Right-click any border for a menu with these options.
