Use the primitive tool

In Object Mode, you can add primitives without using the "Add Mesh" shortcut. Open the Tool sidebar (T), scroll to the bottom, and click the "Add Cube" icon. Then click and drag in the 3D Viewport to draw the base. Hold ALT to draw from the center, SHIFT to constrain proportions. Release the mouse to set the base, then drag again to set the height. To change the shape before placing, hold the Primitive Button and select another Primitive.
